Album: grave stone markers

gravestones in the family plot of Sylvester Shaw, son of John Shaw and Polly Maria Fox. Sylvester is buried not far from his brother John Langdon Shaw and their uncle Manly Sherman Shaw. Sylvester's daughter Alida married John R. Daniels -- she and her husband are also buried in Woodside Cemetery.

Buried in Sylvester's plot are himself, his wife Amelia Harriet (Noble) Shaw, his son Fredrick Augustus Shaw, his daughter Carrie I. Shaw (these four are all named on the same pillar, with small headstones nearby marking where they are buried), and his daughter Harriet A. Shaw.

Just to the left of Harriet A. Shaw is Flora L. Shaw. However, I don't think she is a daughter of Sylvester.

Hodges family plot at Woodside Cemetery, Lee Center
John Langdon Shaw, nephew of Manly Sherman Shaw, is buried with his wife Tryphena and infant son John in another part of Woodside Cemetery -- an older part of the cemetery close to my Shaw ancestors, in fact in an area that my Shaws and their cousin Shaws of Lee Center and Bradford Township had apparently decided would be the Shaw section. When that generation had taken up the available plots in that section, the next generation moved south a little, to the other side of the cemetery path. That's where Sherman Linn Shaw I and his uncle Egbert DeWolf Shaw are buried with their wives and children.

And right next to Egbert DeWolf Shaw's monument is the Hodges family monument: J. Giles Hodges, his two wives Hattie C. and Ellen (Shaw), and J. Guy Hodges, son of Giles and Hattie. I wasn't sure how long it would take to find Giles and Ellen, but as it happened it didn't take long at all, since they're buried right next to some of their Shaw cousins.

photos of the Franklin DeWolf family plot. Frank was one of the brothers of Malinda DeWolf, wife of Manly Sherman Shaw. Their parents were Dorastus DeWolf and Eliza Coe, who are buried out at Inlet Cemetery.

It was around 1870 that my great-great-great-grandfather John Shaw's Brother MANLY SHERMAN SHAW, one of the pioneer settlers of Lee County, Illinois, bought a fine stone house in Lee Center from its owner, Garrett M. La Forge, who built it in 1862 but had decided to leave Lee Center. On 29 Aug. 1998, it was located at 1125 Inlet Road. The current owners are Jane Biddle and Teresa Geiger. The home, along with a smaller historic stone house at 1125A Inlet Road (formerly the residence and office of Dr. Richard Adams and built in 1848), is in excellent condition and upkeep.
