He was a teacher in a place not far from Nauvoo. He watched the wagons go by carrying the Saints from
the more eastern regions. In some cases the people were hungry and so were their animals. Bill studied
religion and knew of almost all available, including that of the "Mormons". He would take in the families
and feed them, give them rest and feed and water their animals and they would then continue their
journey. When they got to Nauvoo, Joseph Smith heard the stories of this man who would dare to help
them and Joseph sent for Bill. Bill then joined the church and was a bodyguard to both Joseph Smith and
then Brigham Young. There are a few accounts of Bill written by Hope Hilton.

INFO: Edwin Temple Hickman was a Justice of the Peace in Chariton County,Missouri performing
marriages between the years 1822 and 1828. This by a man who belonged to no church and did not
know how to sign his name. taken from page 90, Edwin and Elander Hickman by Hope Hilton. "Family
stories seem to indicate that Edwin Temple Hickman married a girl of more education than himself. One
story from Mrs. Peck states that Elizabeth Adams was the niece of one of the early land surveyors sent
to Kentucky. While living in her uncle's home, or visiting him, she became acquainted with Edwin Temple
Hickman and they were married in February 1813. Elizabeth is said to have been a red head, which
could account for the dark auburn hair her oldest son William Adams Hickman had. Elizabeth was born
and raised in Virginia, and was the daughter of Josiah Adams of Fauquir County Virginia. He was a
Revolutionary war veteran. This information was written by grandson, Easom Hickman's wife Marian in
1915 while Easom was still alive in order that his children could apply for membership in the D.A.R.
should they so desire. The original of this letter is in the possession of Mrs.Leona Hickman Peck of
Pearce, Arizona. Mrs. Peck also owned the Bible of Edwin Temple Hickman until 1976 when it was
misplaced. I viewed this bible in 1960 when we visited her. Photostat copies were made then of the
family records paged in the middle of this large old Bible. There was a large and extensive family of
Adams. The following are letters to W. A. Hickman from his father dated 6 May 1849. They are in the
possession of Hope Hilton
Randolf County, Mo May the 6th, 1849
Dear Children: I avail my self of the present opportunity of informing you that we are all in good health at
present and sincerely hope that you are enjoying the same blessing. We received yours of the 12th of
February--and one of a later date. They gave us great satisfaction to hear of your health and posterity.
You complain of my not writing to you before this time, the reason was when you wrote me from Sand hill
I expected you would make your promise good and I would once more have the satisfaction of seeing
you in this life and I waited in hope of seeing you until it got too late for a letter to pass from me to you,
and when the winter broke I expected er long before a letter could pass to you that you would be
searching for gold but not in California, report say that there is plenty at the Salt Lake, if so your folks (
the Mormons_ aren't smart or they would of kept it dark, report say that two of them brought in four to five
thousand dollars of the gold found in Salt Lake to barter for goods. I would like to know if gold was plenty
at the Lake. I have had no notion of being a Mormon but if I could see a good prospect for gold it would
be a great inducement at least for a whole. Your brothers D.and Easom has injured them selves by
taking the gold fever they have made the necessary preparation, wagon, oxen, etc., to go to California
but one that agreed to go with them and bear his part of the expense of the outfit and when he acted out
it dissappointed them and a great loss they gave a high price for the wagon and sixty dollars a yoke for
cattel ( they had three yolk) they had him bound in a bond and the last I heard from them they were
going to law. You stated in your last letter that Bernetta had written to her father. I doubt whether he
got the letter he has married his aunt the Wisow Hobbs, and has moved to Howard County and is living
in or joining New Franklin. Right here I must give you a good one. I think but you can judge for yourself.
You know the old man and me was very thick and confidential by times, so just before he was married he
came to see me and told me all about it( for he couldn't talkd of anything else), that the widow had four
Negros that one was a fine Smith and he intended to put him in a shop at Milton, etc etc. But behold
between the time they agreed to marry and the wedding day she slipped the Negros out of her hands
privately and it weren't known for months then Old George made a sham sale of all his Negros to the Dr.,
it is believed to be a sham sale at any rate or Frederick has got them all. When the old man married he
sent word to your mother that he was a perfect happy man nothing lacking how he is now I can't say I will
leave it with you to Judge. Catharine Burchartt and Squire Benj. Haley married a few weeks past, bore
big kin folks, there has been a great many deaths and marriages since you was here, the window
Whitenburg is living at Old Georges pace at Milton. Health has been very good in this section for the last
twelve months, your brother George was well the first of last month and stated in his letter that he
intended coming home in July if he didn't marry. He is in fine health complains of nothing but being too
fleshy. Oh how my children is scattered and still going. Jo states for Illinois in a few days, my family is
getting small, home is a lonesome looking place, nothing flourishing in the way of improvement, but I
have plenty bread and meat. I have bacon for sale and could spare one hundred barrels of corn. Write
on reception and write every opportunity. I would of been very glad of seeing you once more but it is
doubtful whether I ever see you again in this life. Kiss the little children for me and tell them I want to see

"Dear brother: doubtless you have ere this abandoned the idea of getting a letter from me before your
departure to California. In short the cause is that I lost the name of the county and post office which you
gave me, and after I had entirely despaired of finding it LO! all of a sudden I obtained that treasure ( a
good proof of orthodox experience) from father who had it in a letter from you. I have just returned from
Randolph where I found all the relatives well. We have some new relatives in Randolph i.e. Richard
Hickman of Kentucky ( a Baptist preacher) who is teaching school in the vicinity of Jo Bakers, near
Huntsville ( a widower) and Columbus Hickman from near Jefferson City.( Nephew of Richards) who is
now teaching school in Goodings neighborhood. George W.H. is still in Mississippi State but evpects to
return this spring. Easom is teaching school. Jo is not doing much of anything ( not self confidence
enough to drive piles) D. is doing a pretty fair business in the healing art. Jack and Rhoda are well and
doing well he is as large as he was when you saw him and Rhoda much more. Tom and lettice are doing
well both in property and children they have 6 children and looking out for another. I have done a better
business than I anticipated when I saw you last. I booked $200.00 per month since I saw you . My
practive this winter has been mostly Scarlatina Anginosa ( scarlet fever ) bronchitis and pneumonia all
of which I have had entire success, but the worst is I cannot collect enough to go to California to the gold
mines, I want you to write on reception and give me all the news you know about the mines both there
and at the Salt Lake and what time you expect to leave for that country, ect If I can be certain to find you
in April I want to come and see you and Bernetta and children before your departure, Salina wants to
know what you have names your blue-eyed girl and also sends her respects to all of you
no more at present

any time in the winter. We received 2 letters form Iowa, one from Jane, one from Eason they bring us
distressing news. George your dear brother J.H. is dead he died on the 7th of April he was sick about 7
weeks. We hoped to live by again but he has left this trouble some world has has gone to rest we ought
not to grieve after him believing he is happy. George we are all alone now have no child in the state and
our time cannot be long in this world we are getting old, your father is 75 I am 73 soon and let us know
how you are do not wait for me to write it is a hard task for me to write We had a protracted meeting
here in this neighborhood last August there was 39 addition to the Church your father and I was of that
number 2 days after the meeting broke up we went to Iowa we went to J.H. first and he went with us all
the round we went to Easoms, next and then we went to see Rhoda he appeared to enjoy himself. Well I
am glad that we went to see him he was much rejoiced that his father had joined the church.
